Train Ticketing

Train Ticket

The trains are safe, comfortable and inexpensive, the ideal way for independent travellers to get around and see Vietnam at ground level. The train journeys are also an experience in themselves, and become an integral part of your visit to Vietnam.

Air-conditioned trains with sleepers and on-board catering link Hanoi, Hue, Danang, Nha Trang, and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Hoi An has no station, but it’s just 30km by bus or taxi from Danang. There are also trains from Hanoi to Haiphong (for Halong Bay) and Hanoi to Lao Cai (for Sapa).

You’ll see some wonderful scenery from the train between Hanoi and Saigon. Easily the best section is between Hué and Danang over the Hai Van Pass, where the train runs along the coast past bays and islands and through the hills. The train travels at low speed up the fierce gradients, with an assisting locomotive at the rear and people sitting on the roof.

Train from/to Ho Chi Minh/Hanoi

Trains prove a good option for travelers to see more of the countryside in Vietnam, yet travel more comfortably than the bus. Up to now, Vietnam Railways System (VRS) has been the main service of domestic train. With its implementation in almost every provinces and cities in Vietnam and activity scope of 2.652 km of railway, VRS offers trips on newer trains equipped with modern air-conditioned cars and berths for comfortable overnight trips.

Classes

There are four classes of train travel offered in most trains: hard-seat, soft-seat, hard-berth, soft-berth.

1)Hard-seat is tolerable for day travel, but it can be even less comfortable than the bus overnight.

2)Hard-berth has three tiers of beds (it means six beds per compartment). The upper berth is cheapest and the lower berth is most expensive.

3)Soft-seat includes vinyl-covered seats, more comfortable than benches of hard-seat, but rather hot if without air-conditioner in the summer.

4)Soft-berth has two tiers of beds (four beds per compartment), the price for each bunks are the same. These compartments have a door.

Train to Lao Cai /Sapa

The best way to go to Sapa from Hanoi is to take the trains. Most of the tourists who visit Sapa travel from Hanoi to Lao Cai (a town at the border with Yunnan province of China, separated by the Red River and the other side is the town of Hekou of China) by overnight trains. Night trains is the best option because it saves time and two nights of accommodations.

The train runs along the Red River. All trains leave at night from Hanoi and arrive at Lao Cai train station in the early morning.

Trains also leave at night from Lao Cai and arrive in the morning in Hanoi.

To meet tourist demand, some service providers upgrade carriages and put them different names. These carriages are clean, comfortable, fully meet tourist standard with air-conditioners and soft berths.

Lao Cai – Sapa Transfer

The Hanoi – Lao Cai train stops at valley of Lao Cai, just 35 km from Sapa; to reach Sapa, you need to travel an hour more by shuttle buses or private car. The buses stops at Sapa’s main post office, leaving you with some minutes walk into town center. It can also drop you at your hotel, depending upon the location of the hotel. Ticket price for connecting buses Lao Cai Station – Sapa is Vietnam Dong (VND) 30,000/person/way (about US$2/way).
